To date the Amazon is still one of the most mysterious and unexplored beauties of the world. It is the Earth's largest body of fresh water: it flows at five times the capacity of the Congo and 12 times that of the Mississipi - making it the wettest region in the world - and supports 30% of all known plant and animal species.

With a population of 2 million, Manaus is the main gateway to the Amazon from Brazil. The city prospered during the rubber boom of the 20th century; currently it thrives on income generated through being a Freeport, trade gateway and tourist attraction.

Things to do

The forests and lakes of the Amazon

Manu National Park

Located amidst lush Amazon rainforest in south-eastern Peru, the Manu National Park is the largest rainforest reserve in Peru. On of the top attractions in Peru, the Manu National Park is known worldwide for its unique and rich biodiversity. The Park is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, along with many native tribes, who still practice the centuries old customs and traditions of their ancestors.

Tambopata National Reserve

The Tambopata National Reserve is part of a 3.7 million acre reserve in south-eastern Amazonian Peru. It is also one of the finest nature reserves in South America and the world's largest uninhabited jungle, least disturbed by the human activities. One can find over 200 mammal species, 1,300 bird species, 900 butterfly species, 190 reptile species, 94 species of fish, and 10,000 species of plants, including 2,000 flower species.

Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve is like no other protected area in Peru and is directly linked to the economic well-being of at least 100,000 “ribereños,” people. The locals live along the riverbanks of the Amazonian flooded rain forest relying on its aquatic and terrestrial resources for food and income. Pacaya is the second largest national reserve in Peru, spanning more than 5 million acres.

Escorted tours

Mumbai: The purple eggplant that Indian shopper Tanuja Krishnan picks out at a Mumbai market stall every week is an unlikely protagonist in a raging debate about whether genetically modified foods should be introduced into India. A genetically modified version of eggplant, a staple in fiery curries, was slated to be the first GM food introduced into India in a bid to stabilise food prices and mitigate some of the effects of climate change on Indian food crop yields. Yet, environment minister, Jairam Ramesh blocked the release of the vegetable until further notice following an outcry by environmentalists and some farmers. The opposition to GM foods was so heated that some protesters burnt...
