At over 3km wide and 80 metres high, in Southwest Brazil, lie the Iguaçu Falls. Board a 2 hour flight from São Paulo and bear witness to what is undoubtedly one of the world's greatest natural phenomena.

Named after the Guarani word meaning ‘water', the Iguaçu Falls are shaped like a horse shoe, creating the most spectacular waterfall. The view at the precipice is hypnotizing. Experiencing the roaring falls, gigantic rainbow archs and drenching mist is truly wonderful.

The site is part of a virgin jungle ecosystem protected by the Brazilian and Argentinean National parks located, on either side of the breathtakingly beautiful falls.

Things to do

Take a boat ride into the heart of the falls

Guided tour of the falls from the Brazilian side

The finest overall view of the falls is obtained from the Brazilian side, it is from here you can see the most magnificent view and it is from here you get the clearest idea of the size of the falls. The Brazilian park is about 1550sq km of rainforest and has an observation tower by the falls; there is also a walkway that gives you an even better view of the Garganta do Diablo – The Devils Throat.

Guided tour of the falls from the Argentine side

The Argentine side is noted for its close up views of the falls and the forest and with greater opportunities to experience the local flora and fauna at close range, the Argentinean side offers the best vantage points. The fall on the Argentinean side are more numerous and the viewing areas more extensive. With a good eye toucans and other exotic birds can be spotted.

Boat ride into the waterfalls

The trip starts at Macuco’s Track in the Iguassu National Park, towed by electric powered jeep, the visitor’s seat in a trailer driven through the rain forest (3km), watching bird’s wild animals and exotic vegetation. The last part, before the river, is optional to do trekking (600m) in the rain forest, ending at the river edge where a special rubber boat takes the visitors upstream to the nearest possible under the thundering water walls.

White water rafting

You begin with a magnificent view of the falls. Rafting on the Iguaçu River consists of going down by inflatable boats, a series of rapids for approximately 4 km, 2 km of calmer waters where it is possible to swim in the river.

Helicopter ride over the falls (short and long)

Flying over the Waterfalls in a helicopter is one of the activities that make it possible to observe all the geography of this magnificent paradise.

Itapi dam visit

The Dam is approximately 19km from Foz do Iguaçu and is regarded as one of the worlds largest hydroelectric works was a joint project between Brazil and Paraguay. Arrive at the Itaipu Public Relations Centre, for a 30-minute presentation showing the phases of construction and operation of this engineering monument. After this visit, tour the dam by bus and stop at panoramic overlooks. The spectacle of the spillway of the dam, with its huge flow of water is particularly impressive.

Bird park

For a more reliable view of local birdlife a visit here to the Parque das Aves is recommended. Located on the Brazilian side of the falls, the bird park maintains both small breeding aviaries and large walk through aviaries as well as a large walk through butterfly cage.

  • Debate over GM eggplant consumes India

Mumbai: The purple eggplant that Indian shopper Tanuja Krishnan picks out at a Mumbai market stall every week is an unlikely protagonist in a raging debate about whether genetically modified foods should be introduced into India. A genetically modified version of eggplant, a staple in fiery curries, was slated to be the first GM food introduced into India in a bid to stabilise food prices and mitigate some of the effects of climate change on Indian food crop yields. Yet, environment minister, Jairam Ramesh blocked the release of the vegetable until further notice following an outcry by environmentalists and some farmers. The opposition to GM foods was so heated that some protesters burnt...
